In a world filled with serums, actives, and 20-step routines, it’s surprising that one of the hottest skincare trends of 2025 comes from something incredibly old: tallow, a nutrient-dense moisturizer humans relied on for centuries.
Tallow is a purified, nutrient-rich fat traditionally used to moisturize dry, sensitive, or compromised skin. Unlike plant oils, tallow contains fatty acids that are structurally similar to the lipids naturally found in human skin, making it especially compatible and gentle.
Many people are switching back to tallow as modern consumers grow wary of harsh preservatives, fragrances, and unnecessary fillers. Tallow balms are often simple, usually containing only five or six ingredients. Users find them deeply hydrating without feeling heavy, naturally supportive of the skin barrier, and free of parabens, dyes, petroleum, and synthetic fragrances.
Although individual results vary, users commonly report that tallow-based balms help with persistent dryness, flaky or textured skin, irritation from harsh weather, and makeup preparation by creating a smooth, dewy base. Some also use them as an overnight nourishing treatment.
Most tallow balms are fragrance-free and non-irritating, which makes them popular among people who experience reactions to typical skincare products. As with any skincare product, patch testing is still recommended.
Tallow-based skincare is less a passing trend and more a return to simplicity. For those whose skin does not respond well to long ingredient lists or harsh formulas, a tallow balm may be worth exploring.
